Hoppy Kercheval with WV MetroNews is reporting that Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito will announce her plans to run in 2014 against Sen. Jay Rockefeller for the U.S. Senate. Capito has scheduled her announcement for Monday morning at 10 a.m. at the WV State Capitol.
The Washington Post notes the history of the Capito’s father, former Governor (and convicted felon) Arch Moore and Rockefeller.
Meanwhile, Roll Call notes in their story that Capito’s decision to seek a Senate seat places her House seat very much in play for a gain for the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives.
There has been a lot of speculation whether Sen. Rockefeller would seek reelection in 2014 and Capito’s announcement will definitely increase the importance of a decision to be announced soon. Personally, I think this increases the chances that Jay will seek reelection rather than cede the race to Capito and the GOP.
Either way, 2014 is already setting up to be an interesting election year for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives races in WV. Both races will be among the most competitive in the nation.
What are you hearing?
Who do you want to see run for Capito’s seat?
Do you think Jay is up for another campaign? If not, who runs for the Democratic nomination?
And finally, is this another development in the ongoing conspiracy theory that the Manchin and Moore families have a non-compete agreement with one another?
Inquiring minds want to know.
